Fisherman’s Lane set to undergo major refurbishment

The City of Cape Town will be upgrading the Fisherman’s Lane precinct located at Strandfontein Pavilion. The upgrade will include the removal of the damaged road and seawall, the provision of a new access road to link the parking areas and the construction of new recreational facilities. 

The Fisherman's Lane refurbishment project will overhaul the existing facilities and access routes, which have deteriorated significantly over the past few years.

A number of other improvements will be made. These will include the reconstruction of the road linking the eastern and western parking areas as well as the upgrading of the braai and picnic facilities. A boardwalk and walkways will be installed to improve access for visitors. The recreational area will also be landscaped using the natural vegetation found in the area and will include the installation of play equipment and an irrigation system. These upgrades will create a functional and aesthetically pleasing pavilion area. 

In addition, the rock revetment will be extended along the eastern parking area and will include a beach access stairway. A section of the western parking area will be cut back and a gabion will be constructed as further protection along the exposed coastline. The existing underground services will be repositioned and a new water line will be installed to service the irrigation system. New lighting will also be installed.

Work commenced on 24 October 2022 and it is anticipated to take 12 months to completion.

We've been working on and planning for this project for a while now, and I am happy to see that the physical work is finally happening on site. Local residents will see the work progress which is ultimately aimed at providing a safe, dignified, welcoming, well managed and high quality recreational and public space,' said Alderman Eddie Andrews, the City's Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment.
